While the following selection was initially meant as a bit of humor, it has taken on alternative discussions involving more serious considerations in light of the fact that we of today can, when contrasted to a future age... (just as when we compare our present knowledge to those ideas which were relied on in the distant past by the so-called experts of previous eras); will be viewed as being just as ignorant about disease as were those before Germ Theory had developed as a standardized practice of medical intelligibility. Though many of us may view the topic of zombiism in light of some ridiculously portrayed motion picture theatrics centering on violence and gore, it can be used as a generalized metaphor about unrecognized diseases that "creep" into normalized activities in ways too subtle to be detected by those who are either to close to the occurrence or are themselves likewise infected... even though they would claim themselves to feel fine and argue that there is nothing wrong with them... like so many abusers of drugs, alcohol and other socialized substances or activities which intoxicate them. Let us not forget, even though variations are acceptable— fanaticism is an intoxication. And just because you may be surrounded by several others who believe as you do, doesn't mean you can't be loony tunes... like so many of Trump's followers in and out of the government... whether because they are just as stupid or merely playing the part because it is the name of the game in their endeavors of opportunism.
Public Notice: Three days after posting this warning and alert, Cenocracy.org has received a petition from the lawyers of the International Association of Crawling, Flying and Walking Dead (of which Zombies, Vampires, banshees, ghouls, and others are separate chapters within); demanding that we "cease, desist and refrain" from any further proclamation which asserts that zombies (or their brethren) represent the dreaded disease known colloquially as "Trumpītis"... even though they agree that the disease is a threat to what (very) little democracy is left in America... because it eats away at the flesh, blood and bone of citizens rights that were once considered to be a hallmark of American Justice, Liberty, Liberty and progress for all peoples in and out of America. Nonethess, they further state: their clients take exception with and are deeply offended at such an inflammatory accusation that renders them as the preeminent representation of such a disgusting and reprehensible illness; which they claim is a disrespectful affront and defamation of their clients esteemed characters— because no self-respecting zombie in their right mind would be caught dead with any Trumpīte. Furthermore, their clients disavow any connection with the obviously rigged polling accounts which contrive to manipulate the public into thinking that the majority of Trump voters would vote again for him and that they believe avowedly in their choice, when it is well-known that polling numbers are frequently a statement about the "rigging-the-system" tactics used by pollsters who are inclined to frame a poll account to represent a predisposition... as a tool of public opinion manipulation that even the most uneducated Zombie is fully aware of. In other words, it is easy to get the result of a high percentage from a small group of known supporters who are intentionally being polled in order to show favorability for an opinion born in the womb of bias. However, in support of our proclamation, we at Cenocracy.org have received numerous reports (to be used as evidence) that the 'Trump Collective' known commonly as "Trumpītes", do in fact exhibit a zombie-like demeanor... as well as various other single-minded obsessive, non-sensical compulsions. Hence, it looks as if we are headed for a protracted court battle to take place before the International Court of Justice located at the Hague (Netherlands), because the court systems in America are suspected of having become infected with the dreaded Trump disease... whose intensity varies according to person and place of susceptibility. |
On the one hand, we at Cenocracy.org would like to offer a sincere apology to the public, coupled as a humble request to the C.D.C. for a grant to begin an inoculation program against the Trump plaque (though we necessarily would have had to request a similar grant against whatever disease was unleashed in the White House with respect to those who ran for President, since each of them represented their own type of disease America must rid itself of in order for it to truly progress). Because the C.D.C. has been unable to establish the necessary protocols in beginning a necessary program of prevention, Cenocracy.org must establish its own Cenocratic Center for Disease Control and Prevention. The virulence of the Trump disease gives us an indication that humanity is not safe from biological dangers which may unknowingly arise due to occurrences of mutation that epidemiologists are not trained in detecting, nor have any inkling as to the extent which a future mutation can take. In fact, the detection of such an illness as the Trump plague is occurring amongst many in the public who have observed the disease having afflicted family members, co-workers, neighbors, relative, friends and those in the neighborhood store checkout line. There is a massive dumbification to go along with the massive dumbing-down which has occurred for several decades in the public education system. Everyone must be on the alert because Trump's like-minded troopers are depositing mind/body-snatching pods in every nook and cranny they can. Yet, all told; alas... "Trumpītis" rots the brain of the afflicted for which there may be no cure— and may well have to be viewed as human variation of the dog disease called "Alabama Rot". We can only hope it is just as quick in letting society get rid of such an fungus (organic matter infestation).
For those concerned whether or not someone they know may be infected, there are a few signs which may be manifested, though multiple others might be cited in a larger review: For example, stupor, stupidity, staring into space, staggering gait, unable to search for or retain relevant facts, speech disorder, loss of memory, T.V. news binge watching as a primary education source, obsession with adolescent concerns about one's own importance, unable to see past one's own nose in order to navigate between bedroom and bathroom, mindless bantering, basis decisions on the last alternative proposal provided, can't manage a neighborhood koolaid stand because choosing between two different flavors confuses them, continually makes others sick when they open their mouth, expresses their own unique form of nonsense, etc...
Because the disease is transmissible between human populations, exposure to those carrying the Trump virus is a preventative measure vital to keeping it from producing a scenario much worse than it already is. If you're not careful, someone close to you may get the disease and cause undue havoc in the home or workplace. However, others believe the Trump virus or bacterium to be a strain of a previous plague such as that which infected millions of Germans and others throughout the world in World War II, World War I and various other social conflicts or war since it arose with the evolution of humanity in relation to various diseases developed in the wild amongst birds, rodents and other animals, though some suspect it may have an origin extending backward into the deepest recesses of time with the earliest insects and plants as well. In any respect, we now can see a variation of it in Trump and his followers... and those who support him, though they may not be infected, they nonetheless pretend to be infected in order to take advantage of circumstances arising from the disease. In a sense, Trump and his followers are a "natural disaster" which a few take advantage of just as they might a war or a government perpetrated (and thus artfully created) public fear such as were the cases of the 1940's-1950's dreaded "Reds" (Commies or Communism), atomic bomb scare of the 1950's bomb shelter digging craze, government-fueled conspiracies, external/internal terrorism, Mexican alien border crossings, mailed anthrax powder, etc... Necessarily so, the Trump Virus (or/and Bacterium) is being used as a form of biological warfare causing increased rifts between the public and government and amongst the citizens themselves. By dividing the public with the usage of a Trump disease, and as well permitting Wall Street investors widening the divide between the rich and the poor, America is well under way towards being ripe for conquering.
Whereas those of us at Cenocracy.org would like to take out a contract on Trump and the entire White House staff at a penny a head, we know that this offer is felt to be an insult to those with an embraced dedicated patriotism towards an Actual Democracy, because they would gladly take on the task for free. In fact, they would pay us for the sheer pleasure in executing Trump and the rest of the White House administration, not to mention members of Congress, Secret Service, Supreme Court, FBI, CIA, NSA, Homeland Security, Pentagon, and a few religious as well as business leaders... not to mention a few thousand citizen followers of the Trump White House Legacy of Idiocy. Indeed, someone needs to put them all out of our misery instead of having to suffer yet another four years of utter nonsense experienced under the Bush, Reagan and other regimes of monkey political gymnastics. And as part of this political gamemanship, there are many people in the public who are deliberately subjecting themselves to the disease of zombie-like irrationality as part of an underlying rationale to use this form of biological warfare in an attempt to alter the political landscape away from the traditional anti-democratic perspective so characteristic of American politics...having been established (ever-) since the country's earliest American Revolution beginnings.
In in speaking of Revolution, it is well-known that the killing of a despot is not murder... it is a proclamation of Freedom! Liberty! and Justice! Likewise, when a police officer shoots someone, they are very often released from being viewed a killer so long as the action takes place in the line of duty— as defined in accordance with observed rationalizations within a given context. No less, when a soldier kills a designated enemy combatant, their acts are not deemed murder, they are rewared as gestures of patriotism... even though it is widely recognized by some philosophers that patriotism frequently amounts to being the last refuge of a scoundrel, because they use war as an excuse to carry out personal incentives for selective gratification that do not always have peace as the foremost goal in mind. Hence, by application... killing the source(s) of the dreaded Trumpītis can be interpreted as an expression of heroism through a "standing one's ground" self defense posture to effect the preservation of a citizenry that are being forced to submit to a government supported inoculation-by-way-of-an-indoctrination that favors a Trump-styled irrationality because it guarantees people will be more easily duped into accepting pathetic policies such as the laughable National Health Care bill which asserts that Americans will have a National Health Care program second to last, instead of being second to none. And yet, it is astonishing to witness how many people willingly stand toe-to-heel to get their daily dosage of such viral stupidity. It is little difficult to recognize the similarity to the ancient act of the Roman Catholic Church which raised money for its many "crusading" duplicities by selling indulgences; which would, for the most part, pardon wealthy violators of practicing a less than ideal faith. It turned out to be a lucrative enterprise for awhile for many people who participated in the enlarged social game, just like many business, government and religious-body charlatans are hoping to cash in on the Trump snake-oil of venomous nonsense that some are trying to make into a political state religion.
In other words, people are so desperate for concrete progress that the current structure of America's Plutocratic Aristocracy perpetuates via a rigged voting and governing system full of corruption and double/triple-standards; that they deliberately embrace a "Trumpītisness" as a type of "Hail Mary" pass to better times (like drug, alcohol and gambling abusers), by 'betting the farm'... so to speak... on a singular voting effort because all other candidates represent more of the same former nonsense which has led us again and again into conditions of a pathetic reality of mind-numbing futility. Many are trying to avoid the perspective that they may be witnessing the downward spiral of the American Empire, like those who witnessed the final days of the Roman Empire. Unfortunately, despite the genuinely sincere interests for wanting to be a part of progress, Trump is not up to the task so many are wishing for, leaving us with the situation that an infected populace may have to undergo a radical cleansing to not only free the nation and the world of the Trump disease, but institute real developmental change in human society through the adoption of a different type of (Cenocratic) cognitive orientation... as different as was the thinking between pre-human Cro-magnons (40,000 to 10,000 years ago) and post-ape Australopithecines (5,300,000 to 11,700 years ago).
However, it is of need to point out that even if there existed a U.S. Citizenry which was totally free from the dreaded Trump disease... an infected business, government and religious leadership would necessarily preclude the public's ability to improve its own conditions because the majority of businesses, legislatures and religious ideologies are rigged against the people directing their own collective course of desired direction within the scope of an Actual Democracy, without the people resorting to a massive take-over. The Trump disease is like so many other forms which denies the public an ability to practice an Actual Democracy. An aggressive system of denial and refutation flares up like a fever whenever a populace attempts to assert itself on its own behalf, without being subjected to one or another law or process that forces submission and deference to one or a select few who are enabled to take the lion's share of available resources, be it property, social power, money or whatever currency is in vogue. Likewise, changes in social policy would be ineffectual if the majority of the nation was infected by the Trump, Clinton, Sanders, or any of the other diseases which are permitted to exhibit a presence as a presumed cure for some other illness, yet it too is but another style of the same genre of illnesses being nurtured as alternative diseases in order to perpetuate a form of government that is at the heart of disease construction, like so many business, governments, and religions are. and social leaders remained disease free. The public would simply refuse to comply or instigate various methodologies of undermining leadership directives which represented views that were interpreted to be non-sensical because the perception of the majority was based on a world-view aligned with the accompanying illusions produced by the disease. Because the public is subjected to a government, Constitution and Bill of Rights that was incrementally designed by an increased state of an unrecognized disease over many decades, the overall irrationality of the present conditions is difficult for many people to fully appreciate. Being brought up in a social condition of disease in which one must learn to establish some semblance of social equilibrium, makes it difficult for them to see how infected they are... like some addicted to a drug or alcohol whose world-view has been established by complying with the dictates of whatever disease one has been experiencing for extended durations of time. The Trump virus is a "cultured" disease that has other names and guises in different places and different eras.
Like so many sufferers of addiction and illness, those infected with Trumpītis do not appreciate how much of their life has been invested in maintaining the viability of the disease, without even being aware that they are doing so. It is greatly more difficult to eradicate the disease when the purported medicine being offered to them as an alternative, is being interpreted as a curative poison... based on experiences that former political cocktail variations did little to alleviate concerns by getting to the root of one or another social problem. The cure being offered, call it Clinton, Sanders, or some interpreted ideological variation thereof, is perceived to be worse than the disease they are slowly accommodating their sense of self-worth to. The Plutocratic-Aristocracy of America has put the people into a rut that might only be fixed if there is an actual plague which kills all the diseases.
The presence of Trump in the White House is a terrible, terrible, terrible mistake created by an incompetent political system that will neither admit to nor correct the error because to do so would then be a confession of an inability to comprehensively address the many social problems confronting a citizenry subjected to the reality of a narrow-minded falsified democracy used as a gaming technique to exploit the public, so as to perpetuate a double-standard socio-economic lifestyle enabling a few to succeed and prosper at the expense of the many.
We beg the forgiveness of the so many would-be cleansers of the Trump disease, and will humbly accept all your donations as payment for the privilege in executing the Trump troubadours of rodent droppings of stupidity. However, in as much as we are ashamed of presenting a contract for a penny a head... which we are forced to withdraw before it reaches the public grapevine, we must decline payments involving dirty socks, underwear or mother-in-laws with a grudge... but half eaten peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and hamburgers are acceptable, so long as they are in sealed plastic containers and kept under refrigeration. Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience, but we must be permitted to preserve some measure of pride despite our 'faux pas' (social blunder) in demeaning your character by offering a contract out on those infected with the Trump virus. However, in speaking of such, it is necessary to remind everyone that certainty of demise, for the purposes of eradicating the disease, may only be achieved by facilitating a head shot, as is the case with most zombies... though even this measure may not be enough to secure future generations from having to witness their own out-breaks of the dreaded Trumpītis.
However, there is an inclination amongst many of you to include members of the C.D.C. on your list of desired executables because they have been slow in recognizing the Trump Idiocy as a virulent disease which can attack any population without warning. Because recognition of the Trump disease in all its guises (pestis trumponica, trumpsinia pestilensis, etc...) and corrective inoculation measures have been embarrassingly slow, there is a fear... and sometimes panic, that the virus may have become established in some social corridors as well as family blood streams as a type of symbiontic Pandora's box... though some prefer to recognize the disease as the "Trump Worm". Yet, in be fair to the actual Pandora myth in terms of rendering a factual account, it is of value to recite an interpretation thereof:

Let us now take a look at diseases in the form of plagues, because it is relevant towards an understanding of the widespread idiocy Trump has unleashed from different social containers that were previously sealed and hidden away, but the false process of Democracy in America has helped to unleash onto the world as a dire contamination which may take root and be that which defines a growing incipient level of I.Q. idiocy to plague the entire future of humanity. Indeed, one must wonder if America's form of false democracy has been the nurturing womb of so much retardation. It is incredibly astonishing to witness the presence of so much nonsense being permitted to represent the American public, much less the United States Government. Surely it is a disease marked by profound ignorance and being allowed to breed amongst all walks of life, affecting all races and socio-economic levels and professions of society.
Plague Introduction (The Plague is marked by an) infectious fever caused by the bacillus Yersinia pestis, a bacterium transmitted from rodents to humans by the bite of infected fleas. Plague was the cause of some of the most devastating epidemics in history. It was the disease behind the Black Death of the 14th century, when as much as one-third of Europe's population died. Huge pandemics also arose in Asia in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, eventually spreading around the world and causing millions of deaths. Today, thanks to strict public health measures and modern antibiotics, plague no longer strikes great numbers of people, nor is it as deadly for those whom it strikes. Nevertheless, it still persists in some parts of the world where large populations of wild or domestic rodents harbor the fleas and occasionally pass them to humans. Nature of the disease Plague is primarily a disease of rodents, and humans enter only accidentally into the usual cycle. This cycle, rodent-flea-rodent, as a rule is enzootic—that is, present in an animal community at all times but affecting only small numbers of animals. However, under certain environmental conditions the cycle reaches epizootic proportions (affecting many animals in a region at the same time). Spread of the infection among wild or domestic rodents in the vicinity of human habitations creates conditions favourable for outbreaks of human plague, for when an epizootic outbreak kills off the rodents, fleas from the dead animals fail to find another rodent host and thus begin to infest humans. Today most human cases are sporadic, occurring in rural areas by infection from wild rodents such as ground squirrels, but in the past huge numbers of persons were infected in crowded cities by fleas from domestic rodents such as the black rat. 
The virulence of the plague bacillus—that is, its ability to multiply in the tissues of its host and cause death—is remarkably stable and vigorous. Once ingested by a flea, it multiplies until the insect's digestive tract is blocked. When the flea bites another rodent or a human, bacilli are regurgitated into the new host and migrate through the lymphatic system to lymph nodes. There they are able to produce proteins that disrupt the normal inflammatory response and that prevents their digestion by infection-fighting macrophages. With the host's immune response thus weakened, the bacilli quickly colonize the lymph nodes, producing a painful swelling and, eventually, destroying the tissue. On occasion they enter the bloodstream either directly or from the lymph nodes, bringing on a general septicemia, or blood poisoning. On postmortem examination they are found in great abundance in the lymph nodes, spleen, bone marrow, and liver. The disease in humans has three clinical forms: bubonic, pneumonic, and septicemic. 1. Bubonic plague is the best-known form in popular lore, and indeed it constitutes about three-fourths of plague cases. It is also the least dangerous form of plague, accounting today for virtually no deaths and in the past killing only half of its victims (at a time when contracting the other forms of plague brought almost certain death). Typically, bubonic plague starts two to six days after Yersinia infection with shivering, then vomiting, headache, giddiness, and intolerance to light; pain in the back and limbs; and sleeplessness, apathy, or delirium. The most characteristic sign, however, is the subsequent appearance of one or more tender, swollen lymph nodes, or buboes, which are usually distributed in the groin and armpits. The temperature rises rapidly to 40 °C (104 °F) or higher and frequently falls slightly on the second or third day, with marked fatigue. Bubonic plague is not directly infectious from person to person; the bacillus is carried from rodent to person or from person to person by infected fleas. 2. In pneumonic plague the lungs are extensively invaded by bacilli. The physical signs are those of a severe pneumonia (fever, weakness, and shortness of breath). Edema (filling with fluid) of the lungs soon follows, and death will almost certainly occur in three or four days if treatment is not offered. Other manifestations are insomnia, stupor, staggering gait, speech disorder, and loss of memory. Pneumonic plague is highly infectious, as the bacillus can be passed to other people in droplets expelled by coughing or sneezing. The disease can also develop as a complication of bubonic plague. 3. In septicemic plague the bloodstream is so invaded by Yersinia that, in untreated cases, death can ensue even before the bubonic or pneumonic forms have had time to appear. It is marked by fatigue, fever, and internal bleeding. Septicemic plague can arise as a complication of bubonic plague or directly by infection from a flea bite. Plague is diagnosed first by its symptoms and by a history of possible exposure to rodents. Because the symptoms may be similar to those seen in other fevers such as tularemia, dengue, or pneumonia, positive diagnosis must await the identification of Yersinia in a laboratory test of the patient's blood, lymph, or sputum. Antibiotic therapy must be given promptly to protect the patient's life. Treatment is primarily with streptomycin or, if unavailable, gentamicin. Modern therapy has reduced the global fatality rate of plague from its historical level of 50-90 percent to less than 15 percent. The fatality rate is even lower in cases of bubonic plague and in areas where modern health care is available. Hygienic measures and elimination of rats from human habitations have virtually ended urban epidemics of plague in the developed world. Since it is impossible to eliminate rodents from the wild, the disease will always be present, but its occurrence in humans can be controlled by limiting people's exposure to infested animals. A vaccine specific for plague has been used in the past in endemic areas for people likely to be exposed to rodents and their fleas. Owing to its limited effectiveness, it is not generally available. History Plague is an ancient disease that was described during classical times as occurring in North Africa and the Middle East. It is sometimes presumed to be the disease behind several historic epidemics, such as the pestilence described as striking the Philistines in the biblical book of 1 Samuel, but it is impossible to verify the true nature of these outbreaks. The first great plague pandemic to be reliably reported occurred during the reign of the Byzantine emperor Justinian I in the 6th century AD. According to the historian Procopius and others, the outbreak began in Egypt and moved along maritime trade routes, striking Constantinople in 542. There it killed residents by the tens of thousands, the dead falling so quickly that authorities had trouble disposing of them. Judging by descriptions of the symptoms and mode of transmission of the disease, it is likely that all forms of plague were present. Over the next half-century, the pandemic spread westward to port cities of the Mediterranean and eastward into Persia. Christian writers such as John of Ephesus ascribed the plague to the wrath of God against a sinful world, but modern researchers conclude that it was spread by domestic rats, which traveled in seagoing vessels and proliferated in the crowded, unhygienic cities of the era. 
The next great plague pandemic was the dreaded Black Death of Europe in the 14th century. By this time a highly efficient plague reservoir, the black rat (Rattus rattus), was firmly established in Europe, and the disease is supposed to have been brought along trade routes from Central Asia. The number of deaths was enormous, reaching two-thirds or three-fourths of the population in various parts of Europe. It has been calculated that one-fourth to one-third of the total population of Europe, or 25 million persons, died from plague during the Black Death. For the next three centuries outbreaks of plague occurred frequently throughout the continent and the British Isles. The Great Plague of London of 1664-66 caused more than 70,000 deaths in a population estimated at 460,000. Plague raged in Cologne and on the Rhine from 1666 to 1670 and in the Netherlands from 1667 to 1669, but after that it seems to have subsided in western Europe. Between 1675 and 1684 a new outbreak appeared in North Africa, Turkey, Poland, Hungary, Austria, and Germany, progressing northward. Malta lost 11,000 persons in 1675, Vienna at least 76,000 in 1679, and Prague 83,000 in 1681. Many northern German cities also suffered during this time, but in 1683 plague disappeared from Germany. France saw the last of plague in 1668, until it reappeared in 1720 in the port city of Marseille, where it killed as many as 40,000 people. After these last outbreaks, plague seems to have disappeared from Europe. Various explanations have been offered: progress in sanitation, hospitalization, and cleanliness; a change in domestic housing that excluded rats from human dwellings; abandonment of old trade routes; and a natural quiescent phase in the normal rise and decline of epidemic diseases. Such possibilities would have been lost on Europeans at the time, as the very concept of an infectious organism was unknown. As late as 1768 the first edition of Encyclopædia Britannica repeated the commonly held scientific notion that plague was a "pestilential fever" arising from a "poisonous miasma," or vapour, that had been brought "from eastern countries" and was "swallowed in with the air." The pestilential poison disturbs all the functions of the body; for unless it be expelled to the external parts, it is certainly fatal. Expulsion of the poison was thought to be best accomplished by either natural rupture of the buboes or, if necessary, lancing and draining them. Other recommended means were bloodletting, sweating, induction of vomiting, and loosening of the bowels. During the 18th and early part of the 19th century, plague continued to prevail in Turkey, North Africa, Egypt, Syria, and Greece. Once it was a maxim that plague never appeared east of the Indus River, but during the 19th century it afflicted more than one district of India: in 1815 Gujarāt, in 1815 Sind, in 1823 the Himalayan foothills, and in 1836 Rājasthān. These outbreaks merely set the stage for the third great plague pandemic, which is thought to have gained momentum in Yunnan Province, southwestern China, in the 1850s and finally reached Guangzhou (Canton) and Hong Kong in 1894. These port cities became plague distribution centres, and between 1894 and 1922 the disease spread throughout the whole world, more widely than in any preceding pandemic, resulting in more than 10 million deaths. Among the many points infected were Bombay in 1896, Calcutta in 1898, Cape Town and San Francisco in 1900, Bangkok in 1904, Guayaquil (Ecuador) in 1908, Colombo (Sri Lanka) in 1914, and Pensacola (Florida) in 1922. Almost all the European ports were struck, but of all the areas affected, India suffered the most.  The third plague pandemic was the last, for it coincided with (and in some cases motivated) a series of achievements in the scientific understanding of the disease. By the end of the 19th century the germ theory of disease had been put on a sound empirical basis by the work of the great European scientists Louis Pasteur, Joseph Lister, and Robert Koch. In 1894, during the epidemic in Hong Kong, the organism that causes plague was isolated independently by two bacteriologists, the Frenchman Alexandre Yersin, working for the Pasteur Institute, and the Japanese Kitasato Shibasaburo, a former associate of Koch. Both men found bacteria in fluid samples taken from plague victims, then injected them into animals and observed that the animals died quickly of plague. Yersin named the new bacillus Pasteurella pestis, after his mentor, but in 1970 the bacterium was renamed Yersinia pestis, in honour of Yersin himself. It remained to be determined how the bacillus infected humans. It had long been noticed in many epidemic areas that unusual deaths among rats preceded outbreaks of plague among humans, and this link was particularly noted in the outbreaks in India and China. The relationship was so striking that in 1897 Japanese physician Ogata Masanori described an outbreak on Formosa as "ratpest" and showed that rat fleas carried the plague bacillus. The following year Paul-Louis Simond, a French researcher sent by the Pasteur Institute to India, announced the results of experiments demonstrating that Oriental rat fleas (Xenopsylla cheopis) carried the plague bacillus between rats. It was then demonstrated definitively that rat fleas would infest humans and transmit plague through their bites. With that, massive rat-proofing measures were instituted worldwide in maritime vessels and port facilities, and insecticides were used in areas where plague had broken out. Beginning in the 1930s, sulfa drugs and then antibiotics such as streptomycin gave doctors a very effective means of attacking the plague bacillus directly. The effectiveness of these measures is told in the declining numbers of plague deaths over the following decades. From a maximum of more than one million in 1907, deaths dropped to approximately 170,000 per year in 1919-28, 92,000 in 1929-38, 22,000 in 1939-48, and 4,600 in 1949-53. Plague is no longer an epidemic disease of port cities. It is now mainly of campestral or sylvatic (that is, open-field or woodland) origin, striking individuals and occasionally breaking out in villages and rural areas where Yersinia is kept in a constant natural reservoir by various types of rodents, including ground squirrels, voles, and field mice. Some 1,000 to 3,000 people worldwide contract plague each year, and some 200 of them die. The main regions of plague are in western North America; the Andes region and Brazil in South America; a broad band across Southwest, Central, and Southeast Asia; and eastern Africa. Most cases today occur in Africa. With the rise of global terrorism, plague has come to be seen as a potential weapon of biological warfare. During World War II, Japan is said to have spread Yersinia-infected fleas in selected areas of China, and during the Cold War the United States and the Soviet Union developed means for spreading Yersinia directly as an aerosol—a particularly efficient way to infect people with lethal pneumonic plague. Such an attack might cause a high casualty rate in only limited areas, but it might also create panic in the general population.
